Food Appreciation Post

One of the things I was super excited to try in Germany was the food.  I love food (esp. bread and coffee). While most of what I've been eating has been sandwiches, I have been able to try some really great things just in my first two weeks. This post will basically just be pictures--enjoy!




Up first: airplane food. Lufthansa keeps you pretty well fed. Of course, I got wine as soon as it was offered. We were also given breakfast and much-needed coffee.

Schloss Waldhausen cafeteria food. The top two things: the bread and the spaetzle, which is basically little doughy egg noodles. Yummmmmmmmm. Also: note the glass bottle with the clear liquid. That's sparkling water. Nobody really drinks plain water, especially not tap water.

Various alcohol. Radler is a half beer/half lemonade mix, which makes it tolerable to non-beer drinkers like me. One of my favorite things about Germany so far, however, is the individual serving wine bottles. It's about two glasses per bottle, they're cheap, and it's not beer!

A typical lunch for me, packed and brought to language school. Nothing special, just bread, salami, Gouda, and leafy greens. The bread makes sandwiches so much more filling. It's usually stuffed with seeds and tastes so good.

A latte macchiato courtesy of my host mom. Everyone drinks these all the time. I don't even think they exist in the States, but they're super popular here.

Cappuccino and Hänchenschnitzel with pommes (fried chicken cutlet with fries), because it's the perfect food and drink combo, right? Also, bless up for ketchup that doesn't have curry in it. Curry is another really popular thing, and they especially love to put it in ketchup. I am not a fan.

Cherry pie made with cherries from my host mom's cherry tree. I love to bake, and going 4000 miles away from home really motivated me to make a classic American dessert.

And, a little out of place, Glühwein! It's spiced red wine served hot (mulled wine), traditionally around Christmastime. Not sure why, but my host mom and her boyfriend decided to serve some up before dinner and I was not about to pass up the opportunity to try it.

That concludes my food appreciation post for now! I'm sure I'll be trying many more new things in the future, but I've had a pretty good time snacking on all sorts of things in my first 3 weeks away.
